And the Top Writers are...

Last night at Book Café with John Corey Whaley, we announced the top writers in our POV Story Writing Contest. The top nine writers are:

VICTORIA MACIAS for "Ghost Fields"
KATRINA DARWICH for "Sacrifices of Siblings"
MACKENZIE SMITH for "The Record"
LILLIAN HUGHES for "Baxter the Great"
VANA MATEVOSIAN for "Dun dun dun!"
HYLA ETAME for "Everlasting Memories"
ASHWINI DHAMODHARAN for "When Dreams Are True"
ALISSA SHTERENBERG for "The Afterworld"

These nine writers received a gift card from Barnes & Noble, plus a book on writing--their choice of Stephen King, Anne Lamott, or Annie Dillard. Oh, and applause!

In addition, we had five honorable mentions:

ABRIELLE MARSDEN for "A Light in the Darkness"
PRESTON REYES for "Without Her"
JANE GRIGORYAN for "Is It So Simple?"

These five writers received a small gift card from Yogurtland, plus their choice of one of Corey Whaley's two older books (Noggin or Where Things Come Back). Also applause.

All of our other writers (we had 71 total for the contest!) received a gel pen in the color of their choice, plus two art postcards.

This week at the library...

On TUESDAY NIGHT at 7:00 p.m. at the Buena Vista Branch, it's our November meeting of the 10-12 Book Club! We will meet to discuss A Darker Shade of Magic, by V. E. Schwab. On WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON at 4:00 p.m. at the Buena Vista Branch, the TAB (and friends) will meet with Anarda for a Teen Community Conversation! We will provide snacks and some guiding questions, and YOU will provide the ideas about how Burbank can become a better place for us all. Please RSVP to Anarda ( to let her know you will be able to attend. On THURSDAY NIGHT at 7:00 p.m. at the CENTRAL LIBRARY (NOT at Buena Vista!), please join us for BOOK CAFÉ with JOHN COREY WHALEY! He will talk about his newest book, Highly Illogical Behavior, and we will do our usual thing (drink cappuccino, book-talk what we're reading) as well. There will be copies of his books for sale, and he will autograph. And Corey will be presenting prizes to our TOP WRITERS in the POV WRITING CHALLENGE, so if you wrote us a story, be sure to attend! (This event is for TEENS in grades 6-12 ONLY!)
