The Teen Summer Reading Program starts on June 13, and part of what you have to look forward to this year is four sessions of Book Café! We started this program last year, and it was so popular that we decided to continue the tradition as an integral part of summer.
If you missed it last year, you are probably wondering: What is Book Café? Well, the café part is round tables that seat six or eight of you and your friends, and coffee house-style treats like coffee, cappuccino, or hot chocolate (yes, we have marshmallows), and the "good" cookies! The book part is, you bring whatever book you are reading, and if you feel moved to, you can stand up and do a "book-talk" about it. That's kind of like a movie preview: You talk about what the book is about, without giving away the good parts or the ending, and it's designed to make other people want to read the book.
The other aspect to Book Café is authors--we invite authors of teen books (hopefully either some that are known to you or some you'd like to get to know) to come hang out with us. It's informal--the author stands up and talks a bit about his or her books, writing process, whatever, and then he or she circulates and socializes with everybody. It's a great way to get to know an author (and her books!) better.
This year at Book Café, we are pleased to announce three guest authors:
Mary McCoy, author of Dead to Me,
a wonderful noir murder mystery set in the 1940s;
We are so excited to get to know them and hear all about their work!
Book Café will take place on June 15 and 29, and on July 6 and 13. June 15 we will get things rolling with book-talking and bookish social media. Mary is visiting on June 29, Michelle will join us on July 6, and Robyn will be our guest on July 13. So be sure to turn out for all these wonderful evenings! And remember, if you bring your Book Café bookmark and get it stamped each time you come, if you have attended three of the four you will receive a free book of your choice from our awesome stash on July 13! (There will also be random prize drawings at each event as well.)
You can sign up for GAME ON!, the Teen Summer Reading Program, starting June 1. Go to our website (burbanklibrary.com), find the link on the home page, and register! It's easy, it's free, and it implies no obligation. You can do one thing, you can do everything, you can do nothing! But we certainly hope you will join us for Book Café!
If you need a quiet place to study, the Buena Vista Branch is making its auditorium available to you every afternoon and evening this week! Tables, chairs, and plugs for your devices are all available. So come hang out at the library! (We also have librarians to help you if you get into an information bind!)
