On Tuesday night, we had our first meeting of the year of the 6+7 Book Club. This club started out small but has grown to 15 members (of whom 13 were present), and we're happy to say they are all engaged, conversational readers--looks like it's going to be a fun year!
Next month's book is Seven Wonders Book 1, The Colossus Rises, by Peter Lerangis. Eight books were nominated for November's book, and the voting was close, but the final choice (despite Rhett's cautioning us about reading the prequel first) is The Extraordinary Education of Nicholas Benedict, the prequel to The Mysterious Benedict Society, by Trenton Lee Stewart.
Skulduggery Pleasant, by Derek Landy
Among the Hidden, by Margaret Peterson Haddix
The Sea of Trolls, by Nancy Farmer
Leviathan, by Scott Westerfeld
Kiki Strike: Inside the Shadow City, by Kirsten Miller
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
The Bad Beginning (A Series of Unfortunate Events),
by Lemony Snicket
Next month's meeting is on October 11.
On Thursday night, the 8+9 Book Club met on an off night, to avoid Back to School Night at the high schools. Seventeen of our whopping roster of 25 readers were present. We had a raucous and impassioned discussion of Far, Far Away, by Tom McNeal, the saga of Jeremy Johnson Johnson and his personal ghost, Jacob Grimm. Yes, that Jacob Grimm. All but a couple of people really enjoyed the fairy tale-bending nature of the book, liked the characters and the writing style, and were beguiled by the build-up of suspense. The book received a rating of 8.5.
Next month's book is Before I Fall, by Lauren Oliver, and for November we will read The Glass Arrow, by Kristen Simmons.
Other books we considered (in descending order) were:
Jackaby, by William Ritter
A Monster Calls, by Patrick Ness
Kingdom Keepers, by Ridley Pearson
And Then There Were None, by Agatha Christie
Throne of Glass, by Sarah Maas
The Accident Season, by Moira Fowley-Doyle
Rook, by Sharon Cameron
Court of Fives, by Kate Elliott
The Wrong Side of Right, by Jenn Marie Thorne
For those who missed the meeting, there are several copies of Before I Fall waiting for you at the Circulation Desks at both Central and Buena Vista.
Next month's meeting is on October 12.
