It's National Poetry Month!

What does that mean for you? Activities, programs, opportunities, WORDS.

"A poem makes clear without making simple."
--Jane Hirshfeld

There's the "Dear Poet Project." Listen to a poet read one of his or her poems, then write a letter responding to the poem. The deadline is April 30, and you could get a response from the poet AND be published online at in May!

Here's a listing of poetry events in California during April. Check some out!

This one is kind of goofy, but could be fun: Poem in Your Pocket Day! On April 30, pick out a poem you like (perhaps one of the selection featured on their pdf, or something you discovered for yourself), and carry it with you all day in your pocket so you can share it with others.

Come to the library to find a good book of poetry! We own about 800 volumes of poetry, and displays are up! And don't forget novels in verse, like the books of Ellen Hopkins, Sonya Sones, Margarita Engle, April Halprin Wayland, K. A. Holt, our friend Ron Koertge, or one of my favorites, Sharp Teeth, by Toby Barlow.

Tomorrow (Thursday), join us at the Central Library at 3:30 p.m. for our Blackout Poetry Party! We supply the sharpies, the book pages, and the snacks--all you have to do is look at a page of type and find your poem! (This activity is for teens in grades 6-12.)

Then on Wednesday, April 29, at the Buena Vista Branch, at 7:00 p.m., let poet Ron Koertge teach you how to write a pantoum! This workshop does require a sign-up, so email! (This activity is for teens in grades 6-12.)

Want to know more about poetry, or experience authors with whom you are unfamiliar? Sign up with the Academy of American Poets ( for Poem-A-Day and get a poem in your email every day during the month of April! If you want more, there are several other organizations who do this, including the Poetry Foundation, Every Day Poems, and the publisher Knopf/Doubleday.
