10-12 Book Club Report

Our consensus in the 10-12 Book Club was that although the idea for The Butterfly Clues, by Kate Ellison, was interesting, as was its protagonist (Penelope, nicknamed Lo), hanging out inside the thoughts of a girl with extreme OCD and paranoid tendencies was hard going (and kind of irritating--tap tap tap BANANA!). We also felt that the plot reveals were so telescoped that they were no longer even remotely a surprise by the time they happened. As Mason put it, "There were eight or nine characters at the beginning of the book, and by the end there were half that many, because they all turned into each other! And I saw every one coming."

We are all excited to read More Than This, by Patrick Ness, this coming month (when John Green says "Just read it!" we will comply!), and for November the club followed the lead of the 8+9ers and selected I Am the Weapon, by Allen Zadoff.

Other books we considered:
The Story of Us, by Deb Caletti
Meet Me at the River, by Nina de Gramont
Reality Boy, by A. S. King
Finnikin of the Rock, by Melina Marchetta
Cinder, by Marissa Meyer
The Monstrumologist, by Rick Yancey
