Book Club Report for October

I already reported on the 10-12 Club last week; here is an update for 6+7 and 8+9 Clubs.

On Tuesday night, 14 members of the 6+7 Book Club discussed the merits of The Last Dragonslayer, by Jasper Fforde. Comparisons were made to the writings of Diana Wynne Jones, to J. K. Rowling, and to Patricia Wrede. There’s no coincidence that these are all British authors! We also discussed whether the fact that the author is a man made a difference in the way the protagonist was written. The consensus was a very high rating of 9.25.

Next month’s book is Kiki Strike: Inside the Shadow City, by Kirsten Miller. The books we considered for December were:
The Peculiar, by Stefan Bachmann
Ship Breaker, by Paolo Bacigalupi
The Graveyard Book, by Neil Gaiman
Howl’s Moving Castle, by Diana Wynne Jones
Sorcery and Cecelia, by Patricia Wrede
The Amulet of Samarkand, by Jonathan Stroud

And the winner is…The Amulet of Samarkand (Bartimaeus #1) by Jonathan Stroud.

On Wednesday night, we had an uncommon 8+9 Book Club meeting (with 12 attending) because…we had no book to discuss! Due to a mix-up, first the books didn’t get ordered and then our supplier didn’t have many copies, so they have been coming in three books at a time (and they're still not all here, but hopefully within the next two or three days!).

So we pushed this month’s book, The Scorpio Races, by Maggie Stiefvater, to next month, and next month’s book, I’ll Be There, by Holly Goldberg Sloan, to December, and we just met to socialize and talk about other books we are currently reading. It was fun!
