Poetry Slam Prep

We had a great time with April Halprin Wayland at the Poetry Workshop yesterday! We did exercises, we wrote poems, we shared (a few--everybody was SHY!), and we librarians are hoping this gives those who attended both inspiration to keep writing and courage to present some poems at our upcoming OPEN MIC NIGHT and POETRY SLAM on July 24! It's not too far away--everybody be thinking what entertaining thing you want to do!

Thanks to April, who gave everyone who attended an autographed copy of her book, Girl Coming In for a Landing, and her CD, It's Not My Turn to Look for Grandma. What a nice surprise!

Here's a photo of some of us, writing poetry together:

TSRP Deadlines Approach!

NEXT WEEK is a busy one for Teen Summer Reading. Here are the highlights:

First of all, how are you coming with the TRIVIA CONTEST? You have until NEXT FRIDAY, July 20, to complete it and turn it in (by 5:00 p.m. at the Reference Desk of any Burbank Library), so if you want to do it, better grab one and sit down with the library catalog (OPAC) SOON! There are five prizes for the top performers on this quiz, and we will be awarding them at our Open Mic Night and Poetry Slam on July 24 (yes, you must be present to win). Good luck!

Are you keeping up with your DREAM JOURNAL? You must have a dream journal with dreams recorded in it to be admitted to our DREAM INTERPRETATION WORKSHOP, also NEXT FRIDAY at 3:30, at Buena Vista. You can SIGN UP for this workshop starting on MONDAY the 16th.

And don’t forget that NEXT WEDNESDAY, we have CULTURE SHOCK L.A. hip-hopping at the Northwest Branch at 6:30 p.m. They are GREAT—don’t miss the show! As usual, there will be a prize drawing.
Finally, all you HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS are missing out on a great opportunity--winning a NOOK READER for your very own! All you have to do is write a BOOK REVIEW for our blog. We even give you simple guidelines to follow (click on the "Book Review Guidelines" page above). Write one today! Only a couple more weeks to enter your name in the drawing...

Reading Log Rule

Since there seems to be some confusion about this issue, we are clarifying here, on our website, and on our Facebook page:

If you are keeping a reading log and bringing it in to get it signed and receive tickets to go in the jar for the weekly drawing, you MUST bring it in yourself. You can't send it with a parent, you can't send it with a brother or a sister, you can't send it with a friend or a cousin...you must bring it yourself in order to receive tickets.

Likewise, if you win a prize, you must either pick it up yourself (and identify yourself for the librarian at the Reference Desk), or you must let one of us know that it's okay with you if your parent, brother, sister, or friend picks it up. Otherwise, we won't release it to anyone but YOU. We do, after all, want YOU to receive the prize you won!
