There was a lot of skepticism about Shusterman’s vision of a youthful Purgatory, but everyone enjoyed the book (it ended up receiving a rating of 7.8 out of 10) , and had great fun in detailing why they disliked virtually all the main characters! While we never could come up with an agreement on who was our least favorite character in our book, the favorite character was Leif, a boy who finds enlightenment hanging upside down in a pickle barrel! Go figure.
Next month we'll be reading Black Hole Sun, by David Macinnis Gill.
This Wednesday night at Middle School Book Club/Central, we had 11 in attendance to discuss Julie Kagawa's book, The Iron King, the first book in a series of four. Everyone liked it pretty well (although we all agreed she could have used a good editor), and the rating was 8. A few people said they would probably continue on to read the rest of the books in the series. Grimalkin (the cat) seems to have been the favorite character.
Next month's book, Death Cloud, by Andy Lane, has been slow to arrive; we had nine copies to give out at club, but the other four book club members will have to wait a week or so until the rest come in. We will email you when they arrive.
After our book discussion, we started talking about what we want to read over the summer. Anarda and Melissa had compiled a long list of series (where we would give you the first, but all of us commit to reading the rest of the series on our own), and there were also some suggestions of stand-alone books. We did not vote yet--we'll do that next month--but I'm including them here to remind you (or inform you, if you missed book club) to think about these and have a good idea of which one(s) you like, so we can get through the voting process pretty quickly next month. ALSO, if you have additional series or stand-alone books to nominate, please SEND THEM TO ME so I can send them out to everybody for consideration.
